The zi wei dou shu star that rules your chart, and the stone that shares its element

by Proyoo 01 Nov 2026

Zi wei dou shu is a Chinese astrology system that predates the Western familiarity with feng shui. Instead of a zodiac sign, it draws a chart of twelve palaces and fourteen main stars, positioned by the date and hour you were born. The star sitting in your life palace is read as the dominant note of the chart.

Every one of those fourteen stars is assigned one of the five elements. That assignment is not decorative. It decides which stones the tradition treats as supportive for a person with that star in a prominent position, and it is why a jeweller who works in this style asks about a birth date before recommending a bracelet.

The groupings below follow the assignments used in the Ni Haixia line of teaching, where each star is fixed to one element and does not change with the chart.

Wood stars: Tian Ji and Tan Lang

Tian Ji (天机) is the star of calculation and movement. Tan Lang (贪狼) is the star of appetite, whether for money, pleasure or knowledge. Both carry wood.

Wood in jewelry means green and living materials rather than a colour alone. Green jade, green aventurine and carved sandalwood all sit in this group. For someone with either star high in the chart, a green stone bracelet or a sandalwood piece tends to be the one that gets worn, because the tradition pairs movement with something that grows.

Our sandalwood and carved wood pieces cover this element without colour.

Fire stars: Tai Yang and Lian Zhen

Tai Yang (太阳) is the sun. It is the star of public standing and generosity, and charts with it prominent tend to be described as open and visible. Lian Zhen (廉贞) is the star of talent and, in the older language, of complicated attachments.

Fire stones in the trade run red, orange and pink. Carnelian, red agate and rose quartz are the common choices. Rose quartz is worth naming here because the tradition also files it under emotional warmth, which is closer to Lian Zhen's second meaning than the pink colour suggests.

The love and harmony collection is built on rose quartz and rhodochrosite and covers this group.

Earth stars: Zi Wei, Tian Fu and Tian Liang

This is the largest group. Zi Wei (紫微) is the emperor star, read as dignity and self-direction. Tian Fu (天府) is the treasury, the star of storage and steady accumulation. Tian Liang (天梁) is the sheltering star, associated with protection and with elders.

Earth stones are yellow and brown. Citrine is the standard one, and yellow jade and tiger's eye follow. The logic is that earth holds and stores, so the jewellery chosen is the kind people describe as bringing things to rest.

Citrine and jade pieces sit here, and it is not a coincidence that the wealth collection is built almost entirely from earth stones. The wealth palace is where that reading is anchored in the chart itself.

Metal stars: Wu Qu and Qi Sha

Wu Qu (武曲) is the star of earned money, the one associated with a person who works for what they have. Qi Sha (七杀) is the general star, decisive to the point of bluntness.

Metal stones are white, clear and pale. Clear quartz, moonstone, white agate and freshwater pearl are the usual picks. Metal is the element of structure in this system, and the stones that read as clean rather than colourful are the ones that get filed under it.

Water stars: Tian Tong, Tai Yin, Ju Men, Tian Xiang and Po Jun

Water carries more of the fourteen stars than any other element. Tian Tong (天同) is ease and comfort. Tai Yin (太阴) is the moon, associated with quiet wealth and with women's matters. Ju Men (巨门) governs speech and argument. Tian Xiang (天相) is the seal and the go-between. Po Jun (破军) is the star of breaking and starting over.

Water stones are black and blue. Black obsidian is the standard one, followed by black tourmaline, lapis and dark agate. It is the element most people already own something from, because black goes with everything.

The protection and peace collection is built on obsidian and Dzi beads and covers this group.

What to do with this

You need the actual chart to know which star sits where. That requires a birth date, an hour and a place, and it is not something you can read off a birth year the way you can read a zodiac animal.

What you can do without a chart is notice which element you already gravitate toward. Most people do own one, and it is usually the one their chart leans on. If you have never worn a green stone and find yourself drawn to one in a shop, that is the same instinct the chart is meant to formalise.

The five elements themselves are covered in more depth in the feng shui five elements guide, and the question of which wrist to wear a piece on is answered in which wrist to wear a feng shui bracelet.

Proyoo sorts its collections by element rather than by colour, so a piece can be chosen from the chart instead of from a photograph.
